Skype Acquires GroupMe - A Group Messaging Service

Online calling service Skype, announced on Monday that it has agreed to acquire GroupMe which is a group messaging service. The financial details of the deal were not revealed.

GroupMe, a New York based start up just over a year old offers its users way to send a group messages from their phones, is a part of market which turned red hot earlier this year. Beluga was acquired by Facebook which was a competitor to GroupMe.
Skype and GroupMe have a shared vision of creating applications and experiences that are the daily communications choice for a billion people. We will continue to seek the top talent and technology to make that vision a reality.

"The GroupMe team has created an incredibly sticky group messaging experience that works across mobile devices and platforms, making this a perfect addition to the voice, video and text products in the Skype family." added Bates.
In an announcement Skype also said that GroupMe will provide "best in class text-based communications and innovative features that enable users to connect, share locations and photos and make plans with their closest ties."

Skype is itself going to be bought by Microsoft for $8.5 Billion, but the transaction has not been completed yet.
