How-To Install Adobe Photoshop CS5 on Ubuntu 11.04

I installed Ubuntu 11.04 on my laptop a few days ago, I liked everything about Ubuntu, its fast, free and has a fresh UI. Ubuntu is an amazing option for people who don't want to spend money on an OS. After a few days usage I started feeling the need to switch to my desktop running Windows just to use Adobe Photoshop and similar applications specific to Windows.

After some research(Google), I found that we can use Wine - a compatibility layer which can run Windows applications on any Linux OS.

Today, I'm going to show you how to install Adobe Photoshop CS5 on Ubuntu 11.04 using Wine.
  • You first need to install Wine on your Linux machine. Here is the guide to install Wine and other related applications to install/run Windows applications on your Linux system.
  • Once you have installed Wine, you can install Adobe Photoshop on your Ubuntu system.
    1. Open Terminal and type,
      sudo apt-get install msttcorefonts
You will also need to install some core Microsoft Fonts to run Photoshop.
    2. You will need to download Adobe Photoshop CS5 30-Day Trial Pack from Adobe's Official Site. If you have purchased a copy of Adobe Photoshop CS5, you can use that instead of downloading the 30-Day trial from Adobe.
    3. Download DLL_PACK.zip, which contains msvcr80.dll and atmlib.dll.
    4. Extract the files from the DLL_PACK.zip, the password for the file is "http://www.techgom.com/".
    5. Open Winetricks,
      1. Choose Select the default wineprefix and press OK.
      2. Choose Browse Files and press OK.
      3. You will now see your virtual C Drive, read as drive_c.
      4. Browse to drive_c > windows > system32 and paste the extracted DLL files here.
    6. In Ubuntu, by default executable permission is set only applications downloaded from trusted repositories, to set executable permission for setup.exe of Adobe Photoshop CS5, right click on setup.exe, select Properties, select Permissions tab and tick Allow executing file as program.
    7. Now just double click on setup.exe and sit back and relax till the installation completes. Adobe Photoshop CS5 will be installed at its default locations drive_c > Program Files > Adobe.
    8. Note: You can also specify the location where you want Photoshop to be installed.
Congratulations! You have successfully installed Adobe Photoshop CS5 on your system.
