Swype Keyboard Gets Updated With Speech And Word Prediction

Nuance, the company that acquired Swype Inc. for approximately $100 million in the last year has released its first update for Swype keyboard. It is also a major update which adds voice and handwriting recognition to the wonderful software.

The Swype keyboard was highly popular among Android enthusiasts. Swype was licensed by many popular handset manufacturers like Samsung, LG, Motorola, etc. The new updated Swype keyboard can be downloaded through Swype beta program.

I have installed and tested the keyboard on Samsung Galaxy S GT-I9000. You can follow instructions below to install the keyboard,

  1. Click on the Swype Beta Program link.
  2. Once the page opens, read the list of new features included in this updated version of Swype.
  3. Scroll down till the bottom, you will find a "How do I sign up?" section with "Register" and "Login" buttons.

  4. If you don't have a Swype account then click on Register,
    • Fill in your details on the Registration Page.
      Note: Please use email address which is still active, as you will receive confirmation/actication mail on the same email address.
    • Click on Submit.
    • You will see a "Welcome to the Swype Beta!" message on your browser.
    • You will receive an confirmation mail on the address you had mentioned during registration to activate your Swype account.
  5. Else you can directly Login to the site from your Android device,
    • Find the Re-send Swype Beta Installer section and click on "Swype Beta Installer" button.
  6. Now the task on the computer is over, the next steps will be for downloading and installing Swype on your Android device,
    • Clicking on the button will automatically download the installer file on your mobile device, if the download does not start automatically then you can click on the link provided to start download.
    • Wait for the file(Swype Beta Installer) to download.
    • Install Swype Beta Installer on your Android device.
      Note:this will be a small file 181 KB, the actual application is yet to be downloaded!
    • If you get Install blocked, press Settings, tick "Unknown sources" then you will be warned about "Your phone and personal data are more vulnerable to attack by unknown sources..." press OK.
    • Once the installation completes, Press Open.
    • You will be asked to Login, Login using your email address and password you entered during registration.
    • On successful login, you will see the "Download Swype" button, clicking on which download the full application.
      Note: I recommend proceeding further ONLY if you are on Wi-Fi/3G connection, you may face issues while downloading the file on an Edge connection, as you need to download approximately 10Mb or more.
    • Once the download completes you need to install the application.
  7. Next, enable Swype as your input method.

Congratulations!! Swype Beta is successfully installed and ready to use.
